Dear Leah,

It doesn't seem right to say it, but you're four. We thought three sounded old, but this is just crazy talk! Four. Four years of a round little baby turning into a beautiful little child. Four years of a hard-to-please infant turning into a just-wants-to-please you child. Four years of smiles, giggles, hugs, and kisses from the most loving child we could ever hope for.

It's been a wild ride and the days just keep on getting crazier. We've known from early on that you wouldn't go unnoticed as the middle child. You are sneaky and most of the time, we can't turn our backs for a second. We still have moments when we know if it's quiet, you must be up to something! Most of the time, it's an innocent kind of "something" that you're up to, but yet it's still enough to push us right to the edge of crazy! Like, for example, when you're asked to go wash your hands before a meal and you take it upon yourself to also wash your 1-year-old brother's hands, arms, shirt, and anything else he manages to soak. Or, you run out of water and take it upon yourself to refill the water bottle only to end up leaving a puddle the size of a small ocean on the kitchen floor. The list goes on and on.

Yet, for every crazy moment you give, you also balance it with an equal amount of love and affection. You still love to be picked up and held. You give hugs and kisses constantly throughout the day. You are known for your random "I love you"s. You are always concerned about the welfare of others...the first on the scene when someone is hurt or crying. Your favorite past-time is playing with your baby dolls and caring for their every need. Certainly, unlike many preschoolers, you have an empathetic soul. Your world is not nearly as self-centered as that of a typical 4-year-old child.

For as sweet and sensitive as you are, you are equally as strong-willed and determined. You are rough and tough. Dresses are still not your thing, you love to wrestle, and you could play in the dirt for hours if nobody stops you. You always want to try doing things on your own before letting somebody else help. Independence has been your goal from early on. You are doing things quite a bit sooner than your older brother did them and it catches us off guard. We don't ever assume that you won't figure out how to do something that you've set your mind to! We still find ourselves laughing at your very first multi-word phrase, "Leah do it self". We laugh because those four words sum up everything about your strong will at age 1, 2, 3, and now 4.

As such, we did worry slightly that your strong will might have an impact on how you'd do in your first year of preschool. Though you did attend last year, this was the first year where you'd be there for a longer period of time and twice a week. After weeks of picking you up and asking, "Did she do okay?", Mommy finally learned to accept and trust that the teachers really meant it when they said, "She's wonderful". And after getting the chance to volunteer a few times, it's clear that you are doing just fine. In fact, you tend to be a bit reserved and spend a lot of time just watching the people around you.

It's no doubt that you are the child that keeps us on our toes. Just when we think we've got you figured out, you throw us for a loop. You are full of surprises and we love that parenting you is never a boring task. God has certainly given you to us as way to help us grow...in patience, forgiveness, and unconditional love. We love that as you grow, we grow. We love that your big personality is reflection of the big plans that God has for you. You will certainly be used in amazing ways as He continues to guide you and grow you into the beautiful person that you are.

We love you,
Daddy and Mommy

Merry Christmas

It's been a busy holiday season already. So much so that I've had moments of stress and many prayers for a sense of calm to come into the craziness of life lately. The calendar is loaded with stuff and my to do list has seemed a mile long. I know I need to learn to take on less, but I truly enjoy everything that we have going on. I think a majority of the added nuttiness was the fact that our bathroom and mudroom were going through a major remodel. Our house was somewhat in disarray for a couple weeks and that made it harder to live in peace.

Thankfully, that project is done, my to do list is getting shorter, and God answered my prayers for life to slow down. It wasn't in a way I would've expected, but was answered prayer nonetheless. We were hit with a nasty stomach bug that ran through all the kids and myself. It wasn't pretty, but it made for a great reason to stay home, relax, and just enjoy time in our jammies.

Now, we're all healthy (provided that Tyler doesn't come down with it). We're looking forward to a lot more celebrating over the next week....a trip to Wisconsin, cookie decorating (a tradition for more years that I can count), Christmas Eve at church, Christmas morning, Christmas evening with all the Lamonts, a visit from Grandpa and Grandma, my birthday, Leah's birthday, and a WHOLE week of Tyler being off of work!

Merry Christmas from the Sturms :)

Celebrating Thanksgiving

It seems crazy to be talking about celebrating Thanksgiving, but another one came and went. This year has just flown by. In fact, the years are flying by!

I feel like I was just helping at Caleb's first preschool Thanksgiving feast, and now I've helped at our 3rd one. This year I got to help prepare food in the kitchen, so I missed the chance to take pictures of all the fun and games. Leah loved her feast and spent most of the time just staring at all of the other kids watching them eat. Needless to say, she came home and immediately asked "what's for lunch?"!!!

We also had a great time celebrating on Thanksgiving Day with our Lamont family. The kids had a blast tearing apart Grandma's basement and eating the yummy food. We enjoyed the massive amounts of food as well! It's always so fun to kick off the holiday season with Thanksgiving. Getting together with family and creating memories is so special for the kids. As the Lamont family grows, it's harder to get everyone together, but incredibly important to us all. I'm thankful for an extended family that loves each other a ton and makes family time together a priority!

A Warm November Day

Without much of a transition from Summer into Fall, our weather lately has been cold enough to consider it Winter already! Luckily, we had a nice Saturday and managed to sneak out for a bit to enjoy the weather. I know the days are numbered and soon enough we'll be stuck inside for the long haul...and that gets harder with each passing year as the kids get bigger and have seemingly more energy to burn! Anyhow, I took my camera to capture some pics of the kids playing in the leaves. They loved it!

Halloween Fun

It was another fun and busy Halloween in the Sturm home!

We started the fun by carving pumpkins with Grandma, Grandpa, and TiTi. The kids always have so much fun digging in the slimy pumpkin guts! This year, Caleb drew his own face on and Grandpa helped carve it out. Leah and Joel just stayed busy trying to find all the pumpkin seeds.

I had the joy of being a room mom for Caleb's party at school. The party went well and the kids all seemed to have a blast. It ended with just enough time to fly over to Leah's preschool to hand out candy while they trick-or-treated inside the building. I forgot to bring my camera in though. Thankfully Nana Pam was there and since she doesn't go anywhere without a camera, I know she has a few good shots to share.

The weather was gloomy ALL day on Halloween. All of the kids had gotten over or were in the process of getting over a nasty cough, so venturing out in the rain didn't sound like a good idea. God was kind enough to give us about an hour break in the weather and we ended up having a great time. Joel wasn't so happy at first, but eventually he realized that trick-or-treating involved candy that he could eat....and from then on, he was quite pleased with the whole process!

We tagged along with our neighbors for trick-or-treating and I think it made the night even more fun for the kids. It's so sweet to see memories being made with such wonderful friends!

For the first time....

For the first time, I have a 21 month old without a newborn or baby soon to be born. Wow, what a difference this time around! In my heart, he's still such a baby, yet when they were this age, his siblings seemed so grown up. And for the first time, I think I am REALLY soaking up the joys of this magical stage of toddlerhood. Joel is such a delight and though he definitely has his days of pushing my buttons, I just can't get enough of his adorable toddlerisms. Here are a few:

1. He carries his blankie around ev-er-y-where! I might not have let something like that fly with #1 and #2, but sometimes the baby gets away with a bit more!
2. His "banky" in hand means his thumb is in the mouth. Again, not something I'd appreciate with #1 and #2, but he is my baby!
3. He is very into books and often reminds me of Caleb at this age. Sometimes, when I don't hear anything and go into panic mom mode where I wonder what trouble could be brewing, I find instant relief when I see him sitting in a corner somewhere "reading".
4. He has a very clear (and quite adorable) way of saying "yes" when he wants something or agrees to something.
5. He went through an entire month of sleeping horribly and waking up at the crack of dawn. We finally realized it was because he was hearing Tyler's alarm clock. Thank goodness for sound machines!
6. He "runs" everywhere. There is no walking in Joel's world. I guess he just wants to keep up with the rest of the kids.
7. He loves to entertain. Nothing makes Joel quite as happy as getting his siblings to laugh. And the smile the comes upon his face when he gets their attention is priceless!
8. Joel has an amazing vocabulary. Some of our favorite words are "mohockle" (motorcycle), "hairpane" (airplane), "Eeuh" (Leah), "Tayub" (Caleb), and of course the fact that he still calls Grandma "Mama"!
9. He is still a super picky eater. There are days when I wonder if he has eaten even a single thing of nutritional value. One of his first audible words was "cookie" - enough said!
10. He is still my best cuddler. He could and would be held all day if you let him. And sometimes, the housework and millions of other things on my to do list, just have to take a backseat to precious snuggle time with my baby!

Pumpkin Fun

Every year we try to make a trip to a local Fall hot spot called Konow's Corn Maze. The kids always have tons of fun on the giant jumpy pillow, riding tractors, playing in the huge corn bin, running through the straw playground....the list goes on and on. This year, we've had some very random weather shifts to work around as well as some very busy mornings schedules. Having a kid in school five mornings a week makes it hard to do much of anything after he gets home and before the other two need naps. Thankfully, a good friend planned at the last minute to go one evening and invited us along. The weather was perfect and might be the last nice evening we'll have all of Fall! The kids has a blast, especially since they got to enjoy it with a bunch of their buddies!

Field Trip Fun

Leah got to have her first official field trip on Wednesday and she had a blast. We went on a "leaf walk" through a local forest preserve. Thankfully the weather was gorgeous, so the kids all had a great time. I enjoyed getting to spend some one on one time with our poor, neglected middle child (haha, total joke, she won't let herself fall into the neglected category)!

The most surprising part of the trip was seeing my shy girl marching towards the front of the group at least 10 feet from me at all times. Many of the other kids clinged to their moms or dads, but Leah joined the few who decided to make it more of a buddy walk. I almost took it personally and wondered if my kid has already started the junior high mentality of choosing friends over mom. In reality, though, I know she was just having fun and I'm actually quite relieved that our shy kid has the confidence to leave my side!

A New Friendship

Now that Caleb is gone at school five mornings a week, the younger two have developed quite a special bond. Joel is finally at the age where he wants to interact with other kids and his sister seems to be his best choice for that! It's comical to watch them play together as Leah typically clicks into "mommy mode" and bosses poor Joel around. He is like a little baby doll that she can drag around, dress up, tell stories to, and so on. He typically just rolls with the punches, but has been know to fight back with a few slaps or bites of his own. It's funny to see Leah being on the receiving end of that since just a couple years ago, she was trying to defend herself from an older sibling!

And just like that, she 's off...

It's hard to believe it, but Leah is off to her first official year of preschool. She did go last year, but it was just for two hours one day a week. This year, she is in for 2.5 hours and goes twice a week. There is a lot more learning going on versus the socializing (which was very important and helpful) she did last year. She grew and changed so much in the "Giggle Garden" and we can't wait to see more changes this year as an official "Pumpkin Patch" kid.

Not quite ready...

Though he is over-the-top excited and ready, I'm just not quite there. It's so hard to believe our sweet, first baby is old enough to be in school. Caleb is beyond ready for the fun of kindergarten five mornings each week. He loves to learn, read, write, and of course, socialize. It's hard, though, to really accept the fact that his schooling journey is beginning. In teaching, it always seemed like you'd blink and the kindergarten babies were turning 10 and in intermediate school! I hope and pray that isn't the case for this little guy. I am hanging on to the innocence, sweetness, and love that comes with him being five. I'm also quite thankful (unlike many moms with kindergarten kids) that we only have half day kindergarten in our district. It's just enough time for him to get into the groove of school, but we still get plenty of quality time at home. Tune in next year for full day first grade, and I'll really be a sobbing mess!

And to keep up with the tradition, here it is. The back-to-school survey:

Swimming Away Sadness

At the beginning of the summer, we planned to go to the lake three times. The last time we went, in July, we helped the kids get over their sadness about leaving by reassuring them that we'd be back again soon. Sad to say, that didn't happen. The week we were scheduled to go down turned out to have a TERRIBLE weather forecast. There is hardly ever a week straight of rain at the lake, but for some reason, it happened. And it happened to happen during the one week that we could go down one last time for the summer. Major bummer!

Since the kids were so bummed, I decided to plan a surprise getaway for the night to an indoor waterpark. I figured an indoor waterpark wouldn't be too crowded during the summer and I was able to find a great deal on a place we'd gone to once before - TimberRidge Lodge in Lake Geneva. They had a blast enjoying the pools and slides. It was just enough of a getaway to take our minds off of the sadness that there'd be no more trips to the lake this summer!

Cedar Point

For two nights, we were fortunate enough to sneak away to Cedar Point for some fun with the Lamont family. Almost the whole crew has made it out to Cedar Point a few times. The first time we went, I was still in high school....needless to say, the experience in much different now with three little kids! The weather kind of stunk for our first two days, so we missed out on riding as many rides as we would've liked to. We made the most of it, however, and the kids had a blast.

Caleb and Leah rode their first rollercoaster (it was a REALLY small and slow one designed for little kids). After realizing that Caleb enjoyed that one so much, we decided later in the day to take him on his first "real" rollercoaster. He was quite excited about it until we made it to the front of the line. He then began to panic quite a bit, but with enough encouragement from Daddy and Mommy, TiTi, Grandpa, and all the Lamont cousins, he finally gave in. Though he looked scared out of his mind on the ride, he said he thought it was awesome!

The day we were scheduled to go home turned out to be a gorgeous day, so we stayed a bit longer and played in the pool and at the beach. The kids had so much fun and Joel LOVED his first real beach experience. He was COVERED in sand by the time we were done. There are still pieces of sand being found throughout our house that he brought home with him!
