Family Road Trip 2023

We were so glad that we could take a family trip this year with all six of us! Nyla had a busy summer of traveling, but we were able to steal her away for a week of family fun. Our first stop was Sandusky, Ohio. We stayed there for two nights and spent an entire day at Cedar Point. The kids all had a total blast and we stayed at the park from open (an hour early because we stayed on property) to close. I hung with the older two throughout most of the day and rode every roller coaster with them. The younger two are a little more timid about coasters, but did quite a few as well. Tyler, the only one who doesn't do roller coasters, hung with them. He did enjoy doing the water ride a couple times with the kids....water rides are where I draw the line....I hate walking around with wet clothes on!

We left Sandusky and headed north to Gaylord, Michigan. Along the way, we stopped to take a tour of the Ford factory in Dearborn, Michigan. The tour was really interesting and we even got to see the assembly line in action!

We hit some nasty weather along the way, but we finally made it to our camp in Michigan with just enough time to eat dinner, unwind, and head to bed. The next morning, we were up bright and early for an adventure to Mackinac Island. We had so much fun riding the ferry, biking around the island, eating fudge and ice cream, and buying souvenirs. The weather was perfect and we loved all of the amazing scenery!

The last day of our trip was spent at the camp. We relaxed, played lots of games, and enjoyed all that the camp had to offer. The kids loved the outdoor water slide and indoor pool, Joel loved fishing, Tyler and I liked our early morning walks, we all had fun at the activity center, and the smores/campfire each night at our cabin were the icing on the cake. It was so fun to make memories together and we would've loved to stay there longer....despite the fact that the water smelled like rotten eggs and we had a tiny water heater, which meant cold showers!

4H Camping

We love our 4H group and were quite excited when plans were made to go camping together this summer. Unfortunately, Caleb had to work the night of the camping trip, so I stayed home with him. The younger two went with Tyler and had a blast. The group camped at the Kankakee State Park and had a great time. We were all thankful that the weather cooperated. We had a lot of rain leading up to the day of the trip, but it cleared just in time for the campers to set up for the night. We definitely hope this becomes a yearly tradition and hope that all of us can go next time!

First Job

It's hard to believe that Caleb is already old enough to have a job, but the time has come! He is lucky to have a job that he enjoys (so far). He's working at a local candy/ice cream store called Raffys. His plan is to keep working throughout the school year and we are hoping that he can balance it all. It definitely has been a great confidence boost for him and he is learning a lot about working with the general public and we're impressed by how quickly he's adjusted to being an employee. We also love the family discount!!!

Running Buddies

It has been so fun to watch Joel's love for running grow and grow since he started cross country last Fall. He is definitely built for running and has more endurance than anyone else in our family! The best part about his running journey is the friends he's made along the way. He seemed to instantly click with two of them last season - Quinton (who was in his class as well) and Finn (who is a year older and from a different school in the district). This summer, they've spent many Tuesdays and Thursdays together. They had cross country camp in the mornings and then often hung out afterwards. It's been great to see their friendships grow and hear them talk about the upcoming season. Joel really enjoyed getting to go to a race with Quinton and Quinton's dad (who is also an avid runner) this summer. It was awesome for him to get some experience racing in preparation for the upcoming season. We can't wait to watch him as the season takes off in late August!
