How We Survive

This time of year is probably the hardest with young kids. Especially young kids that have more energy than any adult could ever dream of having. These three little people have such a need to run, scream, and play freely. Yet, when the temps are dangerously cold and the snow is up to our knees, we are confined to the four walls that we call our home!

This winter has been a bit easier than last because Caleb has been at school all day. With that, however, comes a kid who has bottled up energy from an entire day of listening, sitting, and learning. He comes home and the hour or two before dinner can be brutal. I have He has kept sane by having his buddy Alec (from three houses down) come over after school to play quite a lot. It has been such a blessing to have this friend because it keeps Caleb from unleashing his energy on his younger siblings!

The kids have also stayed busy with some fun extracurricular activities. Caleb and Leah are doing tennis lessons. They also both still go to Awana each Wednesday night, which they love. Leah and Joel are taking bowling lessons. Grandma Leslie signed them up for that and takes them every Thursday morning. For awhile, Joel would ask what day it was every.single.time. he woke up....all in the hopes that I'd say Thursday because that's bowling day! Thursdays have also been fun for Caleb because he started an after school art club called Young Rembrandts.

On the weekends, we've spent a lot of time finishing up projects around the house. The remodeling that we started after Christmas was a much bigger undertaking than I could've imagined. The actual construction part went quickly, but all the decorating, rearranging, and so forth has consumed more time than I would've liked! Thankfully, the kids have been content to enjoy jammy days at home with movies, crafts, and other things while we finish up stuff.

Overall, it has been easier than last year and we are all quite glad that Spring is on the horizon!

Winter Fun

We've had another winter to remember this year in Chicago! There have been numerous days off of school - frigid temps and tons of snow. Thankfully, a few good snowfalls have come with decent temps, which gives us the chance to go outside to play! The kids could play for hours in the snow. And now that they are all pretty good at getting their layers of gear on by themselves, we make it out the door quick enough to make it all worth it! One particular day fell on a weekend, which meant we ALL got to play together in the snow. Of course, when Daddy is involved, the snowmen are a thousand times cooler (and bigger). Mommy had fun building a snow dog, but the kids continued to say it looked like a snow pig - better luck next time?!?

Dear Joel,

You are our baby. Yet, today, as you turn three, you continue to move further away from being a baby. You constantly remind us that you're not the baby and you're a big boy. You rarely take time to slow down and be held, snuggled, kissed, hugged, and so forth. There was some sort of void that existed this year when, for the first time as parents, we had a two year old without another baby in the house. At two, your siblings were forced to grow up rather quickly. Yet for you, at two, we just wanted to keep you a baby for another year more. You didn't let us.

You keep growing and changing with each day. When we think about who you were a year ago and how much you've changed, bittersweet tears come to our eyes. It's bitter, because time seems to go just a bit too fast this time around. Traces of that sweet "baby Joel" are drifting away. It's sweet, though, because you've grown into a little boy with a personality anyone would love. Your words, your actions, your mannerisms, your everything. All of it is irresistibly adorable. You wake each morning with excitement and joy and you lay your head down each night knowing you've filled the hearts of those around you with so much love and joy. Joy is truly the word for you. Even in your most challenging moments, there is joy. It's hard to get upset when you're just so stinkin' cute!

Yes, you do get away with a bit more than your siblings. We hope that doesn't backfire down the road! In all fairness, though, you put up with quite a bit. You have an older brother who 99% of the time is incredibly annoyed and bothered by you. Yet all you want is for him to include you as one of the big boys. You have a sister, who 99% of the time is bossing you around and telling you what to do. Yet somehow you continue to go back for more! We often say that we can't wait to see how you'll react to each of them when your body, language, and attitude catches up with theirs!

Through it all, you just roll with it. Our old nickname, Roly Poly Joely, takes on a whole new meaning these days. You are our go-with-the-flow kid. Happy to do whatever anyone else is doing. If it's your siblings, you're playing what they're playing. If it's one of us, you're just tagging along and taking it all in. You soak it up when you (rarely) get individual attention. Wednesday nights have become one of your favorites because Caleb and Leah go to Awana for almost two hours and you get undivided attention from us. At first, you were lost without them around. Now, you seem completely okay with being the center of attention!

As you continue to grow, we continue to be amazed by the big heart and big personality that is tucked inside such a teeny little human. You show empathy and compassion for others in such incredible ways. When someone is hurt, you are right there to kiss a boo-boo, give an ice pack, or offer your own beloved blankie to provide comfort. You touch others with your ability to make them laugh. You thrive on getting reactions from others and can be downright funny. You have certainly made this whole "letting go" of having a baby much easier, because with each passing day, we find something more to love about your growing personality. God has given us such a gift in you, our third and final child. We know that He has created you uniquely and we are thankful that you are your own self....not "just like Caleb" or "just like Leah", but just Joel!

Love,
Daddy and Mommy

Before, During, After

I'm not quite sure what the norm is for losing teeth, but this kid has waited a loooooooong time to lose more than the two teeth he lost LAST JANUARY! It finally got to the point where it was loose enough to try to pull. We told him that we thought the tooth fairy gives extra $$$ when teeth fall out on holidays, so he was determined to get it out on New Year's Eve!

Dear Leah,

We blinked. And when our eyes opened, you grew from a baby into beautiful girl. It's hard to believe how quickly five years have flown by. We admit, being the middle child, some memories of your early years have gotten jumbled into the craziness that comes with three kids close in age! It's hard to remember what it felt like to snuggle you as an infant and rock you in the middle of the night. It's hard to remember what your first steps looked like and how your tiny voice sounded when you first said "mama". Yet, with as much as we can't remember, we still have loved every moment of seeing you grow into the girl you are today.

This year has been one of much growth. You now spend more weekday mornings at preschool than at home. Preschool has been a huge part of your life. You are constantly taking what you learn at school and applying it at home. You're writing and beginning to read. You're using your imagination to play for hours. And when you're not playing, you're (finally) enjoying tv and other calm activities. Your favorite thing to do, however, is play for hours outside. You've mastered riding a two-wheeler, can pump yourself on a swing, and can even swim without any floaties! It's no wonder, with as hard as you play, why you fall asleep instantly at bedtime. Giving up naps this year was definitely not easy to do for our most high-energy child, but you've learned to enjoy a couple hours of quiet time in your room. Your room (which is indeed your OWN room) becomes the backdrop for all sorts of make believe. We love to listen from afar as you play show-and-tell with your imaginary students, have tea with your stuffed animals, and take care of your crying babies!

Indeed your imagination and your personality amaze us. The first word that comes to mind when we think of your personality is compassionate. You are a nurturer and are always taking care of others. Your selflessness amazes us. You are almost always willing to put your desires behind those of your friends and family. You feel empathy for others so deeply inside of your heart that you are sometimes more concerned for others than they are for themselves! You've earned the nickname "Mama Leah"....mostly because of how much you "mother" your brothers.

And speaking of your brothers, sometimes we don't know how they'd survive without you. You and Caleb have a serious love-hate relationship. You are either fighting like worst enemies or playing like best friends. And then there's Joel. He is your shadow. He follows you everywhere and you control 99% of the play that occurs between the two of you. He's your student when you play school, your baby when you play mommy, your friend for tea parties....it goes on and on. When you're gone on Mondays and Wednesdays for preschool, he is lost without you!

Despite the fact that you are tougher than either of your brothers, you are also an incredibly sweet child. You are almost always the first to say thank you. You always want to help. When the attitude of your adolescent brother leads him to speak unkindly to his parents, you instantly come running with a hug and words of encouragement to build Daddy or Mommy back up. You are full of hugs, cuddles, and kisses. And even though you are depressingly close to being too big to hold anymore, you still love to be picked up and carried (mostly by Daddy).

For now, we'll savor those moments when you can still be our little girl. We'll pick you up and hold you because we know that all too soon you won't be small enough for that. All too soon, you'll be a big kid. Your imagination won't be as big and your kind heart might be jaded. Yet, we know that you are a child of God. You were created for an amazing purpose. No matter how much changes, you will still be the girl that God blessed us with. We are thankful for the joy He's given us through your five years in our family and we eagerly await watching you grow throughout the upcoming year! Happy Birthday Leah!!!

Love,
Daddy and Mommy

Christmas 2014

After a few weeks of non-stop Christmas fun, we enjoyed one last week of celebrating. The kids have been spoiled with more stuff than they could ever need, but most importantly, have been spoiled with plenty of great memories! It is magical to watch Christmas through the eyes of kids. Everything from their fascination of a little elf who flies to and from the North Pole to singing classic songs totally out of tune to playing happily together with their new toys....and, most importantly, their growing understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. It has been a month full of memories to last a lifetime!

Great Aunt D sent a HUGE box of goodies (and the box was just as much of a hit as the goodies)!

A Much Needed Getaway

We were (once again) lucky enough to sneak away for a short trip to Lake Lawn Resort before Christmas this year. It seems like the Christmas season is getting busier each year in our home, and it's so awesome to have the chance to slow down for even a couple days. We spent Friday and Saturday night at the resort. The kids had a blast doing crafts, swimming, and spending quality time with family. Tyler and I loved having the chance to hang out with the kids and even enjoyed sneaking in a nap (or two). We also gained about 5 pounds eating plenty of yummy food including a delicious brunch before we left on Sunday. The highlight of the brunch was seeing Santa.....unless, of course, your name is Leah!
