Dear Joel,

Your birthdays always seem to be the most bittersweet, because they're a reminder of how quickly our kids just keep growing. Being the "baby" of the family, there are definitely a lot of phases that you have just skipped right over in an attempt to keep up with the pace of everyone else. And, even though you often wish you were older, your age is always a great reminder to the rest of us that you are still just a little boy! That number keeps creeping up higher and higher, though, and your days of being little are numbered.

This year, this number, this is the golden age! Eight is just so fun. You're still filled with wonder and innocence, but you are capable of so much. You have a great sense of independence, but still so much love for those who love you. You've been a favorite to our newest family member...Nyla. It gets the other two a bit jealous, but it's been just what you need to feel like you aren't just that annoying little brother that the other two can sometimes label you as. When you're down in the dumps or having a meltdown, Nyla is the best at cheering you up and making you snap out of it. She seems to just "get" you and we love that about your relationship!

You've also gained a new furry family member this year and he is definitely one of your favorite family members. You wake up every single morning and look for him first. You can't possibly go to bed at night without finding him and giving him a big hug. You definitely have a heart for animals and we love that this dog will be the buddy you have by your side for all the ups and downs of childhood, adolescence, and the dreaded teen years.

Indeed, our family has had some big changes this year, but like you've always done, you just roll with it. Not much changes you. You're still the goofball that wants to make everyone laugh. You're the sensitive one who feels things in big ways. When you're sad or frustrated or angry, the whole world is going to know about it. At the same time, when someone else is feeling down, you're the first to try to help ease their pain. You recognize when people need you and you step in to help however you can. You are the first one to offer a hug or a helping hand. And when you do offer to help, you won't give up. When our basement flooded this year, you were Dad's right-hand man with so many of the tasks. When there is work to be done in the yard, you'll be out there until the sun goes down trying to get the task done. You are the best little shadow and we love how you curiously follow us everywhere just to learn more about the world around you. You're always asking questions and thinking. You are a problem solver and have an amazingly creative mind. At the beginning of the year, when your teacher asked you what you wanted to be when you grow up, you said "an electrical engineer".....so that you could create a robot to pick up your toys!

When it comes to school, you have definitely found a way to make your teachers fall in love with you. You rounded out your year in first grade having a wonderful year and leaving behind a teacher that you adored. She couldn't say enough great things about you. You're doing the same in second grade. We were shocked to learn at conferences that your teacher thinks you're one of the nicest kids and she loves that you are liked by everyone...not because you're the "cool" kid or the one that gets attention for bad things...but because you're nice and friendly to everyone. You do have that in you, and we're glad you take that approach at school, but we sure wish you displayed that just a bit more with your siblings!

Your siblings are definitely your best friends and worst enemies. You are the best one about spending time equally with them all. You love to follow Caleb around wherever he goes. You try desperately to keep up with him, but that usually leads to tears and frustration. There are Pokemon battles that end in wrestling matches, football games outside that end in tears, and xbox playing that ends in yelling. However, you just adore him so much that you don't let the bad stuff keep you from trying to play again in the future. Leah is the one that you chase around and play with no matter what kinds of crazy things she wants you to do....gymnastics in the basement, school in her room, building forts, painting your nails pink....the list goes on and on. It usually lasts for quite awhile before you ditch her to play with Caleb and then everything ends in tears and yelling over who is responsible for cleaning up the massive messes that you make together. That's where Nyla often steps in as your mediator and reminds you all to stop fighting with one another. She has such a way of calming all three of you down and getting you to cooperate.

It's hard to not ramble on and on about all that makes you who you are. Perhaps it's the fact that you're the youngest, but it seems like you are the one who we spend more time slowing down and savoring the moments with. So much joy comes from soaking in the moments with you, because we know how quickly you will grow up. So, for now, we will take all those morning snuggles and all those goodnight kisses and all those tear filled moments of frustration that are cured with a big hug. We love that you're our baby and you let us embrace the magic of your wonder and innocence. Please hold onto that for as long as you possibly can. May this year be filled with all of the magic and wonder that makes you such an amazing boy. You make this world a better place and we pray that will always be true of who you are. We don't know what we'd do without our Joel and we are so thankful that God gave us the task of being your parents.

Love,
Daddy and Mommy

Happy Birthday Chief!

Happy first birthday to our favorite dog in the whole world! We are so lucky to have this guy in our family. Our lives are full of so much more joy and smiles because of him. We love everything about his wonderful personality. He is cuddly, loving, sweet, and just a tiny bit sassy (especially when there is mud in the backyard or playdates with his buddy Ozzie).

Lake Lawn 2020

We had another wonderful, memorable trip to Lake Lawn Resort over the MLK holiday weekend. Sadly, Nyla had a basketball tournament and couldn't join us. We managed to have fun without her though. The kids had a blast going sledding, swimming, walking around the resort, hanging out in the kids area, making a gingerbread house and train, playing tons of games, and eating lots of yummy food. We truly look forward to this vacation every year and are thankful the tradition has continued!

A New Look

It only took until our third kid to finally have to join the world of glasses! Joel can see just fine, but his eye muscles tend to get a bit overtired when he has to focus for too long. That can make things like reading, being on a tablet, watching tv, etc. be kind of tough. We decided it was time to just go ahead and get him some glasses, and, if I do say so myself, it sure does make him look even cuter than he already was :)

Funtopia

For Leah's birthday party, we took a few friends and headed to an indoor adventure park called Funtopia. Leah, her brothers, and her friends had a blast climbing and playing for an hour and a half. There were tons of different climbing walls, an obstacle course, and a high ropes course. Everyone enjoyed the various activities....with the exception, however, of Caleb and Leah on the high ropes course. They both tried numerous times to work up the courage to tackle it, but freaked out and gave up each time! Regardless, everyone had a blast and it was the perfect way to celebrate our high-energy child!

Zoo Lights

For many years, we had a membership to Brookfield Zoo and always heard great things about their zoo lights at Christmastime. We attempted to go once, when there was a rare December evening with decent temps. Apparently, hundreds of other people in Chicago had the same idea, because we ended up waiting in traffic for an hour before we turned around and headed home.

This year, we had the same great December temps and decided to take a trip to Lincoln Park Zoo for their zoo lights. We got there a bit early, but before the crowds. By the time the sun went down, the whole place was lit up and was really neat to see. We definitely enjoyed being able to finally check this off of our Christmas bucket list!

Christmas 2019

Another Christmas season has come and gone. This year, it all seemed to fly by even faster...probably because of the fact that there was one less week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Regardless, we crammed in all of the favorite traditions and added in some extra fun along the way.

The kids loved their matching jammies from the elf. They were also especially excited that our elf brought a reindeer friend with them this year. Joel had been desperately wishing for the reindeer and the look on his face when he found him in the morning was absolutely priceless!
Caleb and Leah both enjoyed fun activities with their church groups. The junior high kids had a fun party at their leader (Miss Amy's) house. They had tons of fun and Caleb came home full of junk food and memories. Leah's 4th/5th grade group spent an afternoon baking at the church. It was sweet to watch so many kids and adults have fun together in the kitchen. This woman, Miss Sherry, is one of Leah's 45 teachers and she connects in the most magnificent way with the kids. We are so thankful for our church family and for how much they pour into our kids!
I enjoyed some memorable moments with friends throughout the holiday season. Some of our coffee gals got together for our annual ornament exchange. It's always nice during this season to take a morning off from the busy, hectic, run-around and just catch up over coffee. I also hosted our annual mom baking day where we got together and baked tons of yummy treats to share.
We loved getting to watch another band concert. We could really see how much these guys have improved in a year. I hope Caleb sticks with band, because he definitely appears to enjoy being a "little drummer boy"!
One of our favorite moments from the Christmas season was getting to celebrate with Nyla, Nikko, and Brighton's mom and grandma. They came down for dinner and we had so much fun hearing stories about these amazing kids when they were younger. We laughed and talked and ate and genuinely enjoyed being one giant family for an evening. We ended the night with very fun gift exchange!
I had the pleasure of volunteering for Caleb's very last holiday party. To go out with a bang, the 6th graders get to have their party at the bowling alley. It was so fun to watch all of these kids who have been buddies for many, many years. They're all still just as silly as they once were, but have much bigger bodies! By the end, I had a whole new appreciation for 6th grade teachers and what they deal with on a daily basis. I think my junior high theory that I adopted many years ago might still be valid....they should all be shipped off to an island together for three years and returned when their weirdness wears off.
We enjoyed carrying on the tradition of our neighborhood scavenger hunt as well as playing "Reindeer Games" with friends. In this picture, the kiddos are showing off their socks they won at the kid sock exchange. It's quite entertaining to see kids get so intense with SOCKS!
Our Santa brunch was, once again, so delicious and fun. We definitely look forward to this tradition each year! Everyone left completely stuffed and feeling heavier than Santa himself!

We had a great time getting together with the Lamont family for cookie decorating. The kids spend the evening loading up on way more sugar than they should and adults even get in on the fun. It has grown to be a favorite activity for the kids, and it makes me so happy to see one of my childhood traditions living on.

In the middle of all the fun and chaos, Joel came down with a nasty bug right before Christmas. It gave us all an excuse to slow down a bit and everyone enjoyed the pj days and rest. Joel was a champ and kicked whatever he had right in time for Christmas!
We spent Christmas Eve lounging around before heading to church and then out to dinner. We made sure to sneak in a quick cookie baking session, too....had to get those cookies ready for Santa!
Christmas morning started with just the six of us. Grandpa, Grandma, and TiTi came over for a yummy breakfast and more presents. We then spent the day hanging out and enjoying all of the new toys and treasures. In the afternoon, we headed out to Indiana for a wonderful get together with the Lamont family.

The sadness of Christmas ending was met with the joy of a visit from one of our favorite guests...Aunt Denise! She flew in on the 26th and stayed for almost a week. We loved getting to spend time with her. One of the highlights was taking  a trip to the city to see A Christmas Carol. The performance was great (even though a few parts left the younger two scared and probably scarred for life)!
