This year, Caleb's birthday present was a butterfly growing "kit". Since it was still arctic cold in March and part of April, we waited until the end of April to order our caterpillars. The kids were so excited when the little critters arrived and we spent a few weeks watching the caterpillars in their little plastic container. They grew nice a fat before forming chrysalises. At that point, Tyler transferred them from their container into the netting, where they sat for about ten more days. The kids were thrilled when they started breaking out as butterflies. After a few more days, it was time to let them go "to Mexico" (as Leah put it). It was such a neat project to do at home and we will definitely be doing it again next year.
